Daria sits on the bow of the first boat while Marcus makes his way across, studiously checking them for leaks, wear—anything that could be classed as dangerous. He stops in the boat next to hers, open water between them. The sun is creeping into the shed, making twinkling lights dance on the surface of the water.

He looks at her, he can see her watching him but her face is cast in shadow. “Could you give me a hand?” he asks. He’s not angry, or irritated even, he never is, but if she isn’t going to help inspect the boats, she should at least be watching him to make sure she can, if the need arises.

Daria stands and the boat jostles under her abruptness, sloshing the water side to side.

Marcus has his hand out to her. She doesn’t take it, so he leans over and holds her boat steady with his hands so she doesn’t tip. He does get a little agitated when she isn’t careful. “Come on Daria, you’ve got to use some care or you’ll end up in the water.”

Daria isn’t here, not all the way, it’s inside, it wants Marcus, or someone else, doesn’t matter, the strength it felt when it transferred was intoxicating, something to strive for.

She steps from the boat with ease, more animal than person, lithe.

Marcus stands nervously on shaky legs as she lands in his boat, her hands in either side, hunched over, he realizes he can see into her top, her breasts are there.

Daria sees him look, watches him get instantly uncomfortable. She feels the rush of his excitement at it, he doesn’t want to like it, but he does, it makes him nervous. “Wouldn’t want me to get wet, would we?” She is toying with him. “You’d save me though, wouldn’t you, from the wetness?”

She hasn’t stood upright and he’s too uncomfortable to stay facing her, he turns away, but just then, the boat shakes, folding him in half with the rocking, and flings him into the drink. The clipboard goes flying, he goes in, not to worry, he can swim.

In the most virginal way possible, Daria says, “Oh, no!” And jumps in after him.
